The age old painting drawn on the temple walls of Orissa, is now a days being done on tassor cloth. It depicts mythological stories with deva, devi’s, animals etc. Tassar Paintings is the significant contribution of Orissa to the world. This hybrid of tradition and modernity depicts the diverse cultural traditions of the nation. It is done by the traditional artisan community called the Chitrakaras. Tassar Paintings are drawn on ‘Pattas’, a piece of cloth on which layers of chalk and tamarind paste are applied to give a leathery finish to the surface. Nowadays Pattas have given way for Tassar cloths. Natural colours derived from stone and earth is used for drawing.
